Finding A Domain Name

As an Internet Marketer, looking for domain names to register is one of the more common things you'll do. Finding domain names is not as tough a task as deciding on the kind of domain name you're looking for. In this article, we're going to briefly touch on each of these topics as you can't really have one without the other. Hopefully, these tips will be helpful.

Finding a domain name is the easy part. There are many places online where you can perform a search to check the availability of a domain name. One of the most popular is whois.com. The site is very simple to use, though at times it is very slow to load. That may be because of its incredible popularity.

One thing you must be careful of when searching for domain names, and this applies to any site where you look up domain names, is that the way their search feature works. At some sites you must leave out the www and the com from the search. For example, if searching to see if www.somenewsite.com is available or not, you would only type in somenewsite. Some of these sites only allow you to look up .com domains while other sites that offer this service will have drop down boxes so that you can choose .com, .net, .org or others.

If a domain name you are searching for is available, you'll get a message saying so. If it isn't available to be registered, then you'll get a message stating this and asking if you want to lookup to see who owns the domain. If this is a domain you really want, you can contact the person that owns it and see if they are interested in selling it. Some domain name lookup sites, like GoDaddy, will give you the option to pay a fee to reserve this domain name should it become available some time in the future. They even offer a service where they will try to purchase the domain for you.

As I said, finding a domain name is not very hard. The hard part is thinking of one that will catch people's attention. There are two ways to go about this. One is with keywords, where you look for a name that is keyword rich for your niche. For example, if you want to make a site for people who want to stop smoking you might come up with stopsmoking.com. The other method of choosing a domain name is to go with branding, what sites like Yahoo and Google do. Their names have nothing to do with what they are, but everyone knows them. Branding is tougher because you really need a catchy name and must do a lot of marketing.
